We love kids at Maintain Your Smile Dental! Your child and his or her dental development is important to us.  We want you to understand the normal patterns for eruption and development so you will know what to expect as your child grows.

It’s easy to notice when front teeth come in and are lost, but often we don’t realize how many back teeth there are and how long our kids keep them.  Most children don’t lose their last baby teeth until 6th or 7th grade, so it’s important they keep them clean and healthy from the time they erupt at age 2 until they are lost in middle school.

This chart may help you understand the timing better:

Remember that teeth form in the jaws long before they erupt in the mouth and are visible. That makes proper nutrition extremely important during infancy and childhood as teeth are developing their roots and hard enamel covering.

Making sure your kids eat their vegetables and drink their milk can have a life-long benefit by helping their bodies build strong teeth.  Having fluoridated water or taking vitamins if a community water supply isn’t available is critical in developing stronger enamel while the teeth are forming in the jaw bones.  It only takes a tiny amount of fluoride daily to change the strength of enamel for a lifetime.
